HONORARY PRESIDENT

photo: Tsunekazu TakedaIn response to Japan’s proposal of the Asian Winter Games (AWG) for the development of winter sports in Asia, the city of Sapporo hosted the first AWG in March 1986 and the second in March 1990.

The cities of Sapporo and Obihiro are now scheduled to host Japan’s fourth AWG after the event was held in Aomori in 2003.

To promote winter sports as well as sporting participation, culture and international goodwill among Asian youths, the 8th Sapporo Asian Winter Games Organising Committee is preparing for the event with Japan’s traditional spirit of hospitality, or omotenashi, based on safe, reliable and environmentally friendly planning for a spectacle that will allow athletes from across Asia to perform to the best of their abilities.

The event will showcase Japan’s dynamism to Asian countries and regions with focus on Sapporo – a city where people engage in international exchanges, embrace cultures different from their own, and continue to take on new challenges amid Hokkaido’s beautiful natural environment.

The Committee is determined that the 2017 Asian Winter Games should be a great success that will help to expand winter sport networks in Asia.

The efforts and cooperation of everybody involved in this endeavour are greatly appreciated.

写真:市長・秋元 克広In February 2017, athletes from across Asia will gather in the cities of Sapporo and Obihiro to compete in the exciting Asian Winter Games. I’m truly thrilled to know that this will be the third time Sapporo has hosted the event in the last 30 years.

Sapporo has hosted numerous international meets in the sporting world, including the Winter Olympic Games and the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Based on this experience, the city is forging ahead with preparations for a successful Games in collaboration with the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC).

The many people who will come to Sapporo and Obihiro from countries and regions across Asia for the event will be welcomed with unrivalled hospitality. This is expected to promote new exchanges as well as highlighting the appeal of the host cities and of Hokkaido as a whole.

All available resources will be used to make the 2017 Asian Winter Games an outstanding showcase for the future. It will provide chances for people to experience the excitement and enjoyment inherent in sports, and will help to give children, in their role as leaders of the future, the aspirations and inspiration needed to inherit this legacy with pride.

The contribution of all involved in these preparations is greatly appreciated.
