Competition Highlights

Speed skating is an ice skating competition in which athletes race each other on a blade that’s approximately one millimeter thick. They compete on a 400-meter oval rink at speeds up to 60 kilometers per hour, which push mind and body to the limit. Athletes need the physical strength to keep skating in a low crouch to limit air resistance. The 2017 Sapporo Asian Winter Games feature single distances, in which two skaters race in a pair against each other, mass start races, in which all skaters start simultaneously and the first across the finish line wins, and team pursuit.
