Short Track Speed Skating

Competition Highlights

In short track speed skating, athletes compete on a 111.12-meter oval track (with five tracks marked) on a rink measuring 60 meters by 30 meters. The races are conducted with a mass start, and the progression in mass start races from the first round to the finals is by elimination, unlike in speed skating races, whose winners are determined based on time. Major factors affecting the outcome of races include how skaters accelerate to gain a better position in the short straightaways after skillfully negotiating the tight corners. Their endurance up to the very end will also influence the outcome of races, as a photo-finish camera at the finish line captures the front tip of the skate blade with a precision of one one-thousandth of a second.
