Athletes ski down snow-covered slopes, attempting to pass through a series of gates (each consisting of a pair of flags or poles) marking the course and cross the finish line in the fastest time.

Cross Country Skiing

Cross country skiing is a form of Nordic skiing in which athletes on skis with free-heel bindings negotiate snow-covered forests, hills and other terrain types with poles. Winners are determined by finishing time or finishing order depending on the event.

Ski Jumping

Athletes ski down a specially constructed steep ramp (known as a ski jumping hill) and leap from the end of it (the takeoff point), trying to stay airborne for as long as possible. Winners are decided by a scoring system based on distance and style in flight and landing.

Skating

Speed Skating

Two athletes race around a 400-meter double track. They start simultaneously with one in the inside lane and the other in the outside lane, and change lanes every lap. Speed skating events can cover 500 meters, 1,000 meters and other distances.

Short Track

Four to six athletes race anticlockwise on an oval ice track with a circumference of 111.12 meters. Since winners are determined by finishing order rather than finishing time, the sport is sometimes called “bicycle racing on ice.”

This sport combines cross country skiing and rifle shooting. The term biathlon means “two contests,” and consists of the Latin prefix bi (meaning “two”) and the Greek suffix athlon (meaning “contest”).

Ice Hockey

Curling

Two teams of players try to score points by sliding curling stones on a sheet of ice towards the house (a set of circles) about 40 meters away. A total of 16 stones are thrown (8 per team) in each end of the game. After all the stones have been played, the team with the stones closest to the centre of the house scores points for that end.
